Cabinet backs shorter Kyiv curfew

The Ukrainian government has recommended that Kyiv
city authorities shorten the wartime curfew to 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. (down from midnight
to 6 a.m. currently), PM Sergii Koretskyi said on Sept. 3.
The move comes as authorities are adapting safety protocols to the new Russian tactic: targeting the Ukrainian capital with a constant stream of jet-powered drones, paralyzing the city in an endless loop of air raid alerts.
“Curfew regulations will be improved, particularly in Kyiv, regarding the movement of transit freight vehicles and passenger transportation to and from train stations,” Koretskyi said.
He said air raid alerts would now be classified by threat level and split in two categories.
“Yellow means a drone attack; red means an increased threat of a missile or combined strike,” the PM said.
Koretskyi said the government also recommends ensuring full operation of the Kyiv metro during yellow-level alerts and increasing the number of surface-transit vehicles when necessary.
“This is so people can get to work, hospitals, and metro stations,” he said.
The issue of revising the curfew has been raised several times over the past week. On Aug. 29, Koretskyi said he had briefed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on adapting the government’s operations to Russia’s new attack tactics. The discussion included plans to reconsider the approach to the curfew.
On Aug. 31, Kyiv authorities asked the government to
ease the capital’s curfew. That day, Anatolii Amelin, co-founder of the
Ukrainian Institute for the Future, told NV that the current curfew was
becoming less relevant as Russia launched attacks with jet-powered drones
almost around the clock.
