Canada expands Russia sanctions

The Canadian
government is broadening its sanctions to target 162 Russian individuals and
entities, as well as “shadow fleet” tankers, PM Mark Carney announced
on June 16.
Speaking at the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France, Carney said the sanctions aim to choke off Moscow’s energy revenues, strike defense-industry firms, and hit disinformation networks.
At the same time, Ottawa stepped up military support for Kyiv. Carney said additional air defense systems are already en route to Ukraine under NATO’s PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) program. Since the start of the year, Canada has provided $2.8 billion in military aid, extended the UNIFIER troop training mission, and placed more than 3,400 people and companies and about 600 Russian vessels on sanctions lists.
After a bilateral meeting with the Canadian PM at the summit, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ottawa for its swift response to the "shadow fleet" problem.
"We also discussed formats for defense cooperation, Canada’s participation in financing production of Ukrainian drones on the Danish model, and cooperation in the energy sector,” said Zelenskyy.
“It is important that Canada will continue to provide Ukraine with energy support and help with reconstruction.”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry responded with customary
accusations against the "Canadian political elite" and announced a
travel ban on 103 Canadian citizens, mostly sitting MPs.
