Canadian PM Mark Carney is expected to announce additional support for Ukraine at the upcoming G7 summit, CBC News reported June 16, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, as part of Carney’s pledge to increase defense spending in 2025, the government has set aside CAD$2 billion ($1.5 billion) for security assistance to Ukraine and to bolster defense partnerships between the two countries.
A government official said Canada is expected to reveal on June 17 how much of the funds will go directly to Ukraine and how they will be used.
Carney has also invited Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to attend the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, and is expected to hold a one-on-one meeting with him on June 17.
“Afterward, G7 leaders will sit down with representatives from partner countries to discuss the war Russia unleashed on Ukraine,” CBC News reported.
Earlier, the White House confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
