China is not ready to arm Russia at the moment, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the BBC on March 17.
“I don't think China has reached the moment now… when it's ready to arm Russia” he said.
China has been unresponsive to Kyiv’s efforts to schedule a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leader of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, he added.
The Ukrainian president remains ready for a telephone conversation with the leader of the People’s Republic of China.
Xi Jinping is set to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin next week.
In recent weeks, Washington and its allies have repeatedly said that China is considering supplying Russia with weapons. According to the American media, it may be drones, ammunition, and/or artillery. Beijing denies the insinuations.
Kyiv insists it has not seen any signs to corroborate the allegations.
China released its so-called ‘peace plan’ on Feb. 24, outlining its position on resolving Russia’s war on Ukraine. The document contained 12 points, including a call for a ceasefire and negotiations, but notably made no mention of Russia withdrawing its troops from occupied Ukrainian territory.
Following the release of the document, US President Joe Biden dismissed China’s position, stating that it would only benefit Russia if implemented.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy welcomed the fact that China was engaging in dialogue about Ukraine, but disagreed with certain points of the plan.
