Zelenskyy congratulates Ukrainians on Constitution Day
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Ukrainians on Constitution Day, emphasizing that today the rights enshrined in it are "fought for in a difficult struggle with self-sacrifice and lives,” in a video address on June 28.
"Our Constitution turns 27 today,” he said.
“The words written in it in 1996 have ceased to be history - they have become truly vital and urgent for Ukrainians: words about the right to life and freedom, honor and dignity, about the value of our land. No one in the country needs an explanation of the word 'sovereign' anymore.”
According to Zelenskyy, "no Ukrainian will ever perceive the rights and freedoms enshrined in it as something given to us from above."
"They are fought for today in a difficult struggle with self-sacrifice and lives. Our Ukraine. Sovereign. Independent. Democratic. Rule of law. It was, it is, and it will be.”
On Wednesday, June 28, Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day, marking the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the Basic Law in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament. This holiday is a national one, but all public holidays in Ukraine are currently canceled due to martial law.
27 years ago on this day, 315 members of the Verkhovna Rada voted to adopt the Constitution of independent Ukraine. This was preceded by the famous constitutional night - nearly a day, including the night of June 28, during which parliamentarians discussed and finally approved the draft of the new document.
The document took effect on the day of its adoption, replacing the Constitution of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) from 1978, under which Ukraine lived for almost five years after proclaiming independence, from 1991 to 1996.
