Denmark calls up reservists after drone sightings — report

The Danish military has quietly called up “several hundred” reservists following a series of unidentified drone flights over Danish territory, local broadcaster TV2 reported on Sept. 29, citing sources.
According to the report, the mobilization order was issued Sept. 28 and “directly referenced” the threat posed by recent unauthorized UAV activity over the country.
“A number of Danish soldiers were urgently called up for service in Denmark on Sunday; this is stated in a confidential notice, the contents of which are known to TV2,” the article reads.
“It has not been possible to get a comment from the Defence Command, and TV2 does not know the exact extent of the call-ups. However, according to sources, there is a call-up of several hundred soldiers.”
Danish authorities declined to comment on the matter.
“Regardless of the scale, emergency calls like this are very unusual,” the report quotes Jacob Kaarsbo, a former senior analyst at the Danish Armed Forces Intelligence Service.
In 2013, Denmark’s total reserve force was estimated at about 3,000 personnel.
On Sept. 25, drones were spotted flying near military sites across Denmark. One was seen near Aalborg Airport, home to an air base that hosts C-130 Hercules and CL-604 Challenger transport aircraft. The elite Jægerkorps special forces unit is also based there. Another drone was detected near Skrydstrup Air Base, which supports Denmark’s F-16 fighter jets.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone incursions as “a hybrid attack.”
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War has linked Russia to a series of drone provocations across Europe, suggesting Moscow may be probing NATO air defenses ahead of any future conflict with the alliance.
