U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard plans to resign next month, Fox News reported on May 22.

According to the report, Gabbard will resign ostensibly to support her husband, who is battling a rare form of bone cancer. She informed President Donald Trump of her decision during a meeting in the Oval Office. She is expected to remain in the post through June 30.

In a resignation letter she later published on Twitter, Gabbard wrote that she must leave public service to be with her husband during a difficult time. She said she had "achieved significant progress" at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and would ensure "a smooth transition of authority in the coming weeks."

Before she was appointed and confirmed as DNI, Gabbard spent years repeating Russian propaganda claims about Ukraine and Syria. In addition to spreading 2020 elections denial claims, she supported the “Ukraine biolabs” conspiracy theory that Moscow tried to use as justification for the 2022 invasion. In 2017, she met with then-Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad twice, drawing criticism form both Republicans and Democrats.
