How Ukraine's drone chief plans to force Russia out of Crimea

Ukraine is executing a historic strategy to reclaim the occupied Crimean peninsula without launching a costly ground assault, relying instead on long-range drone strikes to systematically sever Russia’s fuel, power, and logistics, Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, said in an interview with journalist Caolan Robertson on July 21.
Brovdi outlined the strategy behind recent strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, blackouts across occupied Crimea, and deep strikes hitting logistics depots up to 2,500 kilometers inside the Russian Federation.
Turning Crimea into an uninhabitable island
Unlike traditional military campaigns that rely on armor and infantry to clear territory, Ukraine’s drone forces are targeting the fundamental life-support systems required to sustain Russia’s military machine on the peninsula.
"There is no fuel in Crimea, and I want to tell you, there won’t be any under any conditions," Brovdi said. "Crimea is not self-sufficient in resources. By closing off access routes, we make it impossible for the enemy military machine to function."
Brovdi explained that Ukraine has deliberately avoided destroying the Kerch (Crimean) Bridge during this phase of operations, leaving it open as an escape route for Russian occupational authorities, military personnel, and civilians who moved to the peninsula after 2014.
"We aren’t touching the Crimean Bridge—let them f**k off through it," Brovdi remarked candidly. "All those millions, let them scram through that bridge without stopping back to their Russia... to live peacefully where they came from. That is their karma."
Drawing an analogy to domestic veterinary medicine, Brovdi described the campaign as a systemic purging of occupational forces.
"When a cat has parasites, the vet gives it a pill that makes it impossible for them to stay inside," he said. "In this case, it’s a giant ass-whooping so that all those parasites feel such immense discomfort that they simply flee. For the first time in history, we are doing this without a ground assault, without spending a single Ukrainian soldier's life."
The toll on Russian logistics and morale
Over a recent 72-hour period alone, Ukrainian drone units targeted and destroyed 21 Russian fuel tankers on approach routes to the peninsula. The resulting power outages and fuel starvation have paralyzed Russian garrisons while triggering panic among local occupation authorities.
At the same time, long-range Ukrainian "deep-strike" drones have expanded their operational reach across European Russia, hitting oil refineries, airfields, and supply lines.
"There is not a single kilometer of the European part of Russia left where Ukraine’s freedom-loving bird cannot reach," Brovdi said, noting that range has expanded from 200 kilometers early in the war to over 2,500 kilometers today. "The goal is to create a permanent neuro-psychological disorder among the population of the aggressor state... so they realize the war has come home to them."
Brovdi addressed Ukrainian citizens remaining in occupied Crimea, asking for their patience during the infrastructure disruptions: "Our people in Crimea need to hold on so we can realize this operation."
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
