Ukraine to approve dual citizenship with select countries—Zelenskyy
Ukraine’s impending implementation of the recently passed multiple citizenship law will first apply to holders of German, Polish, Czech, U.S., and Canadian passports, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Aug. 26.
He made the announcement after meeting with the Ukrainian World Congress, an organization representing the Ukrainian diaspora.
“We discussed multiple citizenship,” Zelenskyy said in his evening address.
“The law has been passed, and the government will soon issue the necessary regulations. Germany, Poland, Czechia, the United States, and Canada will be the first to get its provisions applied to them. This is a step toward even greater unity among Ukrainians worldwide.”
At the meeting, participants also discussed diplomatic efforts, pressure on Moscow, the return of abducted children from Russia, and attracting investment to help rebuild the country.
“We also discussed support for our soldiers: representatives of the congress said they have already directed collected funds to purchase drones and pickup trucks for the front; I appreciate this assistance,” Zelenskyy added.
The Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) passed the bill on June 18, and Zelenskyy signed it into law on July 15. It establishes a legal framework for multiple citizenship.
After the bill passed, some human rights advocates urged the president to veto it, warning that it could create additional grounds for residents of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories to lose their citizenship.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
