Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone call with Vladimir Putin to discuss the Black Sea and other issues, Erdoğan’s office said on Oct. 7.
Erdoğan and Putin discussed bilateral relations between their countries, as well as regional and global issues.
The Turkish president said efforts to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea were of great importance. He expressed Ankara’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at establishing direct contacts between Russia and Ukraine.
On Oct. 6, it was reported that drones had attacked two cargo ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. The Alfa Watan sank, while a fire broke out aboard the Able. According to Romania’s Interior Ministry, two people were killed.
Both vessels are owned by Turkish companies. Bulgarian media reported that these were the first known drone attacks on ships in the country’s exclusive economic zone.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia was responsible for the attack. He said Moscow was seeking to escalate the conflict and was increasingly targeting vessels and facilities in the Black Sea near Ukraine’s partner countries.
Earlier, on Oct. 5, a drone struck the Royad Mammadov, a vessel carrying corn, near Romania’s Pescarus gas platform. Zelenskyy said two Russian drones had attacked the ship, killing its captain. According to the president, 11 crew members were rescued.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
