European Union ambassadors could agree on new sanctions against Russia in the coming days, Radio Free Europe journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported on Oct. 1.

He said European leaders will not reach agreement on the latest sanctions against Russia in Copenhagen, but there is hope that EU ambassadors can give the “green light” to the measures at a meeting on Oct. 3.

On Oct. 1, Copenhagen will host an informal EU summit, followed by a European Political Community (EPC) summit on Oct. 2.

Reports say that no official decisions will be adopted at Tuesday’s informal summit.

The parties plan to discuss the creation of a “drone wall” to protect the EU’s eastern border, the use of frozen Russian assets to provide credit to Ukraine, and the bloc’s 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

On Sept. 26, Jozwiak reported that Slovakia blocked restrictions planned by the EU during discussions of the 19th sanctions package.

On Sept. 19, the European Commission approved the 19th package of sanctions against the aggressor state Russia, targeting Russian cryptocurrency, banks and energy.

On Sept. 16, Bloomberg, citing an unnamed European diplomat, reported that the EU postponed the presentation of its new package of sanctions against Russia, initially scheduled for Sept. 17, after U.S. President Donald Trump insisted on tougher European measures as a condition for advancing U.S. sanctions.

Later, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called this information speculation.
