EU approves another Russia sanctions package

21 June 2023, 07:45 PM

Ambassadors of EU countries have approved the 11th package of economic sanctions against Russia, Sweden’s EU Council Presidency mission reported via Twitter on June 21.

The package includes measures that aim to prevent Moscow from circumventing existing trade sanctions. Details will become known later this week once the sanctions are approved in writing, according to AP.

“I welcome the political agreement on our 11th sanctions package,” European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, said in another Twitter post.

“It will deal a further blow to Putin’s war machine with tightened export restrictions, targeting entities supporting the Kremlin. Our anti-circumvention tool will prevent Russia from getting its hands on sanctioned goods.”

Euronews notes that Brussels is increasingly concerned about the sharp increase in EU exports to a number of countries with strong economic ties to Moscow, including Armenia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. This could mean that Russia continues to receive sanctioned goods through these intermediaries. The new sanctions aim to strengthen export control and introduce a new mechanism for influencing companies that may be helping Russia to circumvent the existing trade restrictions.
