EU ambassadors have agreed on a package of financial assistance to Ukraine worth EUR 18 billion ($19 billion), the Czech Republic representative office in the EU Council reported on Dec. 13.

Hungary had been vetoing the support package for Ukraine, a measure that requires the consent of all 27 EU members. As part of the deal struck among EU ambassadors on Dec. 12, Hungary removed its objections to the allocation of the money.

Under the deal, Hungary was also allowed to use EUR 5.8 billion ($6 billion) of EU funds if Budapest fulfills 27 preconditions – mainly concerning corruption issues.

The EU financing may be disbursed in regular tranches as loans on preferential terms.

“(EU) ambassadors in principle unanimously approved a financial support package to provide Ukraine with EUR 18 billion in 2023,” the Czech Republic representative office in the EU Council said, announcing the deal.

“(The Czech Republic) is keeping its promise to help Ukraine stand up to Russia, and the EU remains united,” the message reads.

The Council of the European Union on Dec. 10 approved the proposed EUR 18 billion package of financial assistance to Ukraine for 2023.

The proposal must now be approved by the European Parliament.
