EU Council to discuss suspending Hungary’s voting rights
The Council of the European Union will examine the possibility of stripping Hungary of its voting rights in the body during the upcoming session on May 27, as stated in the meeting’s official agenda as of May 22.
This will be the eighth hearing in a procedure launched in 2018 at the initiative of the European Parliament. At that time, MEPs expressed concern over a series of violations by Hungary—from threats to judicial independence and the constitutional system to restrictions on minority rights, freedom of speech and academic freedom, migrant rights, and the protection of personal data.
On May 13, Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported that the EU is discussing ways to prevent Budapest from blocking the start of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations.
On Feb. 14, Hungary placed a blanket veto opening negotiations clusters that would determine the detailed terms of Kyiv’s membership in the EU.
On March 6, Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán blocked an EU communiqué in which the bloc reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, including opposition to Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and its 2022 full-scale invasion.
