EU develops new sanctions against Belarus

The European Union has created a new package of sanctions against Belarus for its support of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Bloomberg news agency reported on Jan. 26.
These sanctions are similar to those imposed on Russia and include the following:
- export bans on dual-use goods and technologies used for military purposes and that could enhance the nation's industrial capacity;
- sanctions on oil, coal, steel products and gold;
- trade restrictions on luxury goods, investments and the provision of certain services;
- measures that would hit the nation’s aviation and energy sectors and key sources of revenue.
Exceptions were made for medicine, agricultural items, and food, as well as in regard to relevant financial transactions involving sanctioned persons, akin to the sanctions on Russia.
Persons supporting evading the sanctions imposed on Belarusian individuals or businesses will be prosecuted by law.
The sanctions package is yet to be approved by all EU members.
