About 600 Russian officials were expelled from EU countries in 2022, more than 400 of whom were recognized as spies, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said during a briefing on Nov. 16.
McCallum described it as the largest strategic blow to Russian intelligence services in recent European history.
“Together with the coordinated waves of sanctions, it took Putin by surprise,” he said.
He added the UK has refused more than 100 diplomatic visa applications from Russian citizens in 2022, due to national security concerns.
