EU member blocks new grain export plan from Ukraine – PM
One EU member state remains opposed to
Ukraine’s new verification
and authorization mechanism for agricultural exports, Ukrainian PM Denys
Shmyhal said at a cabinet meeting on Sept. 26.
He signed a resolution on a new agricultural export mechanism, which was supported by the European Commission. Four affected countries have reviewed the plan and made their comments, but one other opposed the decision.
"There is no logical or economic explanation for this," said Shmyhal, without specifying which country is blocking the agreement.
On Sept. 28, under the auspices of the European Commission, the next meeting of the coordination platform on export and transit issues will be held to approve the final draft of the plan.
On Sept. 15, Brussels decided not to extend the ban on the importation of Ukrainian grain into five EU countries, provided that Ukraine complies with certain rules, including the implementation of export control measures.
From the outset, Romania and Bulgaria did not impose unilateral bans on the export of Ukrainian grain. The other three countries affected by the grain crisis — Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary — continue to ban the import of Ukrainian grain unilaterally. Apart from wheat, rapeseed, sunflower, and maize, Poland banned Ukrainian cereals and flour, and Hungary expanded the list to 25 items.
On Sept. 18, Ukraine filed lawsuits against three EU countries with the World Trade Organization. The Ukrainian government proposed a compromise scenario to the EU and neighboring countries.
Due to the grain crisis, a conflict arose between Ukraine and Poland. On Sept. 26, the administration of the Polish President stated that “incorrect advice” might be being given to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the matter.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
