Brussels links Ukraine’s EU future to independent anti-graft agencies
The effectiveness of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) is an important part of Ukraine’s path to the European Union, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova wrote on Facebook after the July 23 meeting with new Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.
“Three days of meetings and consultations. With Ukrainians authorities and EU and G7 partners. Today we closed the working day late, with a constructive meeting with new Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka,” she said.
“We met shortly after President Zelenskyy’s announcement of the preparation of a new law that will address cooperation among law enforcement agencies and establishment of independence of anti-corruption agencies NABU & SAPO.”
Earlier that day, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a Ukrainian MP from the Holos party, said that parliament would reconvene the following week for an emergency vote on Zelenskyy’s new draft law concerning NABU and SAPO.
