EU pledges to completely forego Russian energy by 2027
The EU will fully phase out Russian fuel by the end of 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Sept. 23.
Von der Leyen made the statement in a Twitter post shortly after the meeting.
“We discussed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine; we agreed on the need to
cut Russia’s revenues from fossil fuels, and fast,” she wrote.
“This is precisely what Europe is doing with our 19th package of sanctions… By 2027, Europe will have turned the page on Russian fossil fuels for good.”
She said Brussels will step up pressure on Moscow by banning imports of Russian LNG and targeting oil refineries, oil traders, and oil-processing facilities in third countries with additional sanctions.
“We also addressed the Kremlin’s provocations, including regular incursions into European airspace,” von der Leyen added.
“These are clear attempts to test our response. So Europe is speeding up its defense efforts to strengthen its Eastern flank. It must act as a shield for both Europe and NATO.”
When discussing the Middle East, she said Europe remains committed to a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
