EU’s Kallas rejects appeasing Moscow

Ceding
Donbas to Russia and otherwise appeasing the Kremlin will not help end the
Russo–Ukrainian war, EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security
Policy, Kaja Kallas, said on March 31.
Speaking at the opening of an informal, off-site meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Kyiv, Kallas said the Iran war must not distract Europe from Ukraine.
“That means further sanctions against Russia and its enablers, including dismantling the shadow fleet, and providing Ukraine a EUR90 billion loan,” Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted Kallas.
“We must stand up to Moscow, not finance it.”
Kallas said Russia is trying to win at the negotiating table what it could not take on the battlefield, but any lasting peace must be just.
“We all know that Donbas is not Russia’s final destination,” she added.
She and EU foreign ministers visited Bucha, outside Kyiv, to pay respects to civilians killed during the Russian occupation in 2022. March 31 marks the fourth anniversary of Bucha’s liberation.
“There is no clearer example of Russian brutality than what happened there four years ago,” said Kallas.
“Bucha is not an isolated case. It is an example of how Russia wages war ruthlessly, illegally, and without limits.”
She reiterated that ceding territory to Moscow is not just
about land but about the people who live there, and what happens to them under
occupation.
