EU seeks India’s help in enforcing Russia sanctions — report
The European Union will ask India for assistance in enforcing sanctions against Russia, Bloomberg reported on Feb. 25, citing an unnamed EU official.
The topic will be discussed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting this week in New Delhi.
According to the official, the EU intends to tighten control over the implementation of sanctions against Russia, arguing that Russian aggression against Ukraine poses a threat to India as well as to Europe.
The official also noted that India could play a key role in ending the war in Ukraine and ensuring stable peace. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs did not immediately comment on the statement. As it stands, India adheres only to UN-mandated sanctions.
No major announcements are expected during the visit on Feb.27-28, but both sides will seek to lay the groundwork for the India-EU summit agenda, scheduled for later this year, the official said.
India has not condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine but advocates for dialogue and diplomacy to end the war. Russia is among India’s largest suppliers of crude oil and weaponry.
