EU sends Ukraine $4.7 billion in aid ahead of Independence Day
The EU has delivered EUR4.05 billion ($4.75 billion) to Kyiv on Aug. 22, two days ahead of Ukraine celebrating its 34th independence anniversary, Ukrainian PM Yulia Svyrydenko and the European Commission announced.
According to Brussels, most of the funding came through the Ukraine Facility program, the rest—via the Commission’s Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA). The MFA itself is part of the G7’s Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) loans initiative, which leverages Russian assets frozen in the West.
“This support strengthens both our state budget and the recovery process,” Svyrydenko wrote in a Telegram post.
“Thanks to our European partners. Together we confidently move toward Ukraine’s future in a strong and united Europe.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explicitly tied the disbursement of aid to the upcoming celebrations.
“As Ukraine celebrates its 34th Independence Day, the EU sends a clear message: our solidarity with Ukraine is unwavering,” the statement quoted von der Leyen.
“Today's disbursement of over EUR4 billion demonstrates our staunch commitment. This new funding underlines our commitment not only to Ukraine's recovery, but to its future as a sovereign and democratic country. Because when Ukraine is strong, Europe is stronger too.”
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the EU and its member states have mobilized EUR168.9 billion ($198 billion) in humanitarian, financial, and military assistance to Ukraine, commission officials said.
Brussels noted that the disbursement under the Ukraine Facility signifies Kyiv’s progress in implementing governance reforms needed to advance Ukraine’s EU accession.
