EU to discuss additional air defense for Ukraine — Borrell
Additional transfers of air defense assets to Ukraine will be discussed at an upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Aug. 29, Josep Borrell, EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on Aug. 26.
Borrell made the announcement after Russia launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine’s power grid earlier on the same day.
“Russia escalated its aggression with renewed massive attacks across Ukraine targeting civilian infrastructure, including hydroelectric stations, & causing casualties,” the EU official said in a Twitter post.
“Ukraine needs air defense now. I will discuss this with [Ukrainian Foreign Minister] Dmytro Kuleba and EU foreign ministers at the informal Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Thursday.”
Borrell added that lifting restrictions on the use of Western weapons against targets in Russian territory, “in accordance with international law, would strengthen Ukrainian self-defense, safe lives and reduce destruction in Ukraine.”
