The European Union will lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, Reuters reported on Sept. 21, citing diplomatic sources.

According to the sources, EU ambassadors agreed to remove the sanctions unless a member state objects in the coming days.

“The agreement by ambassadors from the EU’s 27 countries came as part of a package deal to renew sanctions on thousands of other Russian individuals and entities for three years — much longer than usual rollover periods of six or 12 months,” the report said.

Reuters previously reported, citing three European diplomats, that France had urged the EU to lift sanctions against Usmanov as part of ongoing talks with Azerbaijan. The French government has not publicly confirmed that it pushed for the removal of EU sanctions against Usmanov. The sanctions include a ban on entering EU countries and the freezing of assets in the bloc.

On Sept. 3, Politico reported that Slovakia’s government had rejected a proposal to extend the EU’s individual sanctions against Russia for 12 months.

On Sept. 18, the Financial Times reported, citing sources, that the EU was considering possible compromises over sanctions against Usmanov to end its standoff with France.
