Why are the Russians painting their Shahed kamikaze drones black?
The Russians have been improving the Shahed drones by covering them with reflective materials, carbon fiber, and painting them black to make them harder to shoot down, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said on national television, commenting on photos of the downed black drones posted by the National Guard and Kyiv's telegram channels.
"Now we see that they have used carbon fiber material. Carbon, which is an absorbing material for radar signals, and black color — it is clear why... This will complicate the work of the air defense, namely the visual contact of mobile fire groups with the target," Ihnat explained, noting that this did not prevent the Ukrainian air defenses from shooting down almost all of the Shaheds that attacked the country early on Nov. 25.
External similarities don't make these black Shaheds Iran's recently demonstrated jet modification.
Ukraine was attacked overnight by a record number of 75 Russian Shahed-131/136 drones, with 71 intercepted by Air Defense Forces. More than 60 attacked Kyiv and its approach, the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Telegram on Nov. 25.
