Egyptian fighter taken prisoner by Ukrainian troops near Toretsk
Ukrainian soldiers from the 28th Knights of the First Winter Campaign Separate Mechanized Brigade captured an Egyptian national fighting alongside Russian troops near Toretsk, according to a brigade report on Telegram on Dec. 26.
The Egyptian decided to surrender after an unsuccessful Russian assault on the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The aggressor began increasing the number of assault groups to 20 people. During one of these assaults, a group of Russians managed to reach the Ukrainian positions but were met with heavy fire from the infantry of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the 28th Brigade, resulting in the elimination of the entire group.
"Only one occupier got lucky because he decided to surrender," the report reads.
“The only problem was that he turned out to be an Egyptian citizen, so the infantry had to explain everything with gestures.”
Situation in Toretsk
The spokesperson for the Luhansk Operational and Tactical Grouping, Anastasia Bobovnikova, stated on Dec. 2 that the Russian army loses approximately one mechanized battalion per week in the battles for Toretsk.
As of Dec. 10, about 400 people remained in Toretsk, according to the head of the Toretsk City Military Administration, Vasyl Chynchyk.
Street battles continue in the settlement, with no clear front line in Toretsk. Not a single building in the town is intact.
Bobovnikova reported on Dec. 24 that the situation near Toretsk is currently the most difficult on the front, with Russians continuously assaulting and battles raging for almost every building.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
