Trump and Stubb hold phone talk
Finnish President Alexander Stubb held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 4.
On his X page, Stubb called the conversation “good and productive.”
He said he discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine with the White House chief.
“The deadline set by President Trump for a ceasefire is approaching,” Stubb recalled.
The Finnish president stressed that his country supports all efforts aimed at an immediate ceasefire. According to him, negotiations should lead to a lasting and just peace.
Stubb added that he also discussed icebreakers with the U.S. president, which are “an important part of security and cooperation between allies.”
“Finland has built 60% of the world’s icebreakers. We are able to build them reliably and quickly,” he emphasized.
On July 14, Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil if Russia does not reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
On July 29, the U.S. president said that Vladimir Putin has 10 days — until Aug. 8 — to cease fire in Ukraine, or the U.S. will impose additional sanctions on Moscow and secondary restrictions on countries that buy Russian oil.
Analysts, including the Institute for the Study of War, believe that the increased Russian shelling of Ukraine and another strike on Kyiv on July 31 indicate that Moscow is rejecting Trump’s demands for constructive negotiations to end the war, despite Putin’s false public statements.
On Aug. 4, Trump said that he would “significantly” raise tariffs on India because it “doesn’t care” how many people in Ukraine are dying at the hands of the Russian war machine.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
