G7 ‘strongly condemns’ Russian IRBM attack on Ukraine
The foreign ministers of G7 countries strongly condemned Russia striking Dnipro City with an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) on Nov. 21.
The corresponding statement was published on Nov. 26.
“Russia’s use of an intermediate range ballistic missile on 21 November is further evidence of its reckless and escalatory behavior,” the communique reads.
“Our support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence will remain unwavering.”
The G7 also pledged to continue tightening sanctions against the revenue streams and technologies Russia uses to wage war in Ukraine.
"We will further strengthen our sanctions and economic measures to limit the revenue, goods, and technologies that Russia uses to finance and conduct its aggressive war," the statement said.
On Nov. 21, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced that Russia struck Dnipro with an Oreshnik IRBM carrying a conventional (non-nuclear) payload. According to the Ukrainian military, the missile was launched from Russia’s Astrakhan Oblast. Some analysts suggested the missile lacked a payload altogether, as the damage from its six independent warheads was minimal for such an expensive weapon: there were no fatalities, with just a handful of people injured.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) reported that the Nov. 21 attack on Dnipro was most likely carried out using a Kedr IRBM, which had successful flight tests in October 2023 and June 2024.
The U.S. Department of Defense assessed that the missile is a derivative of the RS-26 Rubezh ICBM.
