German Foreign Minister doubts Putin’s interest in peace talks
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is skeptical about the possibility of conducting genuine peace negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, German news agency DPA reported on Sept. 10.
At a press conference in Berlin with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Baerbock noted that every peace initiative proposed to Russia internationally has been met with "more terror, more suffering, and, consequently, more deaths."
According to Baerbock, Putin's response to various peace initiatives has been, “Instead of negotiating, I want to further destroy Ukraine.”
She also noted that Russia is waging war on many different levels, targeting not only Ukraine but also neighboring countries, such as Moldova.
“A dictatorial world or what Putin has in mind, wanting a pause to rearm and then take over all of Ukraine or even threaten neighboring countries like Moldova or others, must also be considered when we talk about peace,” Baerbock added.
On Sept. 9, European media reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is preparing a "peace plan" for Ukraine, which allegedly includes allowing Russia to keep control of parts of Ukraine it currently occupies.
