Germany probes sabotage on its naval vessel
Germany is investigating a possible case of sabotage on its navy ship in Rostock, Der Spiegel reported on Feb. 18, citing its own sources.
In 2024, someone cut the cables behind the ship's external hatches on a minesweeper, and theft is not considered a likely motive. The German authorities believe sabotage is the main possibility, and an investigation is currently underway.
No further details have been provided.
This incident is the second suspicious case in the German Navy in a relatively short period of time. In late 2024, unknown persons attempted to damage the newly completed corvette Emden by placing tens of kilograms of small metal elements in its propulsion system. If undetected, these elements could have caused significant damage and rendered the ship inoperable for an extended period of time.
Authorities suspect sabotage prior to deployment, possibly involving Russia.
