Grain elevators damaged, port facilities burning in Odesa after Russian drone attack
Odesa Oblast came under sustained air assault in the early hours of August 2 after Russia launched Shahed drones against the region.
As a result of the attack fires have broken out at various industrial and port facilities in the region, and a grain elevator was damaged, the Southern Operational Command reported on Facebook.
The Shahed drones were launched from the Sea of Azov, the command stated. Ukraine’s air defense units in Odesa Oblast worked non-stop for three hours during the raid.
Several areas of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, were attacked by drones on Wednesday morning. As in previous attacks, the country’s ports and grain exporting facilities were the primary targets.
Speaking after a previous attack, President Volodomy Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s actions were aimed at assaulting the world’s food security.
"When civilian ports are targeted, when terrorists deliberately destroy even grain elevators, it’s a threat to everyone on every continent. Russia can and must be stopped," Zelenskyy said.
The attacks on Ukraine’s grain infrastructure come as the country is embroiled in a dispute with Poland over the latter country’s blocking of Ukrainian grain exports.
The head of the international policy office of Polish President Andrzej Duda, Marcin Prydacz, expressed his belief that Ukraine has been “ungrateful” to Poland for its support, despite the grain export ban.
His comments resulted in the Polish ambassador in Kyiv, Bartos Tsihotskyi, being summoned to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on August 1 to explain his country’s actions.
