IAEA chief returns to Ukraine to assess growing nuclear risks
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi is beginning his 11th visit to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion, according to his Feb. 3 post on X.
“I’m heading to Kyivska substation, critical for the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power, to assess damage and help prevent a nuclear accident,” he wrote.
“An increasingly fragile grid poses a growing risk to all NPPs, not just ZNPP (Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant).”
Grossi’s visit to Ukraine was announced on Jan. 30. He is expected to meet with "high-level officials in Kyiv." Discussions will focus on "IAEA efforts to prevent a nuclear accident" amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Nuclear safety has been an ongoing concern since early 2022, as Ukraine operates several nuclear power plants, the largest of which, ZNPP, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
