Heat wave brings back rolling blackouts across Ukraine

Scheduled power outages will be in effect across Ukraine on
June 30, national grid operator Ukrenergo
announced on June 29.
As rising temperatures increase demand for air conditioning, some households will be disconnected from the grid between 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Industrial and commercial customers will also face power limitations under separate load-management schedules. According to Ukrenergo, scheduled outages could last for up to 3 hours for any given customer.
The regulator once again urged citizens to try and avoid heavy electricity consumption during peak load hours.
On June 29, Serhii Kovalenko, chief executive of private utility company Yasno, advised the public to charge power banks and conserve electricity. He said the grid will operate “under very strained conditions” in the coming days.
“The heat is also a serious test for equipment that has been operating under wartime conditions for more than four years and has survived numerous attacks,” Kovalenko said.
“After winter [Russian] attacks, energy workers managed to
stabilize the system and return much damaged equipment to service. But now we
are in an active season of repairs and recovery. Some infrastructure is under
repair, and some is operating literally at the limits of its capabilities.”
