Hungarian opposition could win two-thirds majority, polls suggest

The opposition Tisza party led by Peter Magyar appears
poised to win a two-thirds majority in Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary
election, Reuters reported
on April 8.
The report cited a meta-analysis of five recent opinion surveys by polling firm Median. According to those surveys, conducted in February and March, Magyar’s party could win between 138 and 142 of the National Assembly’s 199 seats. Fidesz, the party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was projected to take 49 to 55 seats. The ultra-right Our Homeland party could win another five or six seats, the analysis said.
“Fidesz has held a two-thirds majority throughout most of its rule since 2010, and it used that power to approve a new constitution and to pass and amend several cardinal laws, including the electoral law,” Reuters noted.
A two-thirds majority requires 133 seats, meaning if the projections hold Magyar’s party would have the votes needed to amend the constitution and pass other key laws, including changes that could unlock EU funding.

Budapest and campaigned with Orban, calling him “the best player” in diplomatic
matters.
