Hungary’s opposition Tisza party is widening its lead over the ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition, local outlet HVG.hu reported on March 25, citing a survey by the Median Institute for Public Opinion and Market Research.

The poll found Tisza ahead of Fidesz-KDNP by 16 percentage points among the general population. Tisza leads by 20 points among decided voters and by 23 points among those who say they will definitely vote.

Median director Endre Hann said turnout is expected to be high in the April 12 parliamentary elections. He said it is likely that only two parties — Fidesz-KDNP and Tisza — will be represented in the next parliament.

The survey reported Tisza’s support at 46 percent among the general population and 58 percent among decided voters, increases of 4 and 3 percentage points, respectively, from a February survey. Fidesz-KDNP registered 30 percent among the general population and 35 percent among decided voters.

If the poll results hold on April 12, Median said, Tisza would secure a two-thirds majority in the next parliament. Support for smaller parties ranged between 1 percent and 4 percent.

The poll also found that 47 percent of eligible voters expect Tisza leader Peter Magyar to win the election, while 35 percent expect a Fidesz-KDNP victory. Median said the 12-point gap in favor of Tisza represents a “substantial shift,” noting that just two months ago a slim majority of voters still expected Fidesz-KDNP to win.
