Hungary holds EU hostage, Kyiv says

Hungary’s parliamentary
resolution opposing Kyiv’s EU membership mirrors long-standing Hungarian
policy of aligning with Russia to weaken the EU, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry
said on March 10.
In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said the resolution was not unexpected. It called the parliamentary vote a message aimed primarily at ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, saying Prime Minister Viktor Orban is “closing” the EU door to them.
“It is regrettable that official Budapest continues to play the role of a Trojan horse in the EU, trying to block financial and military support to counter Russian aggression and to slow Ukraine’s progress toward the EU,” the message said.
“These actions are intended to hold the European Union hostage and echo Russia’s policy of weakening and dividing united Europe. The Hungarian parliament today certainly drew applause — in Moscow.”
The ministry added the resolution has no legal force in the context of Ukraine’s EU integration and is a political act likely connected to the Hungarian parliamentary elections next month.
Additionally, the ministry criticized the decision to seize funds Budapest confiscated from Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank.
“These decisions null and void; we demand the immediate
return of the stolen funds and intend to seek justice using all national and
international legal instruments,” the statement said.
