Hungary vows secure Putin visit despite ICC arrest warrant

Hungary will provide "safe conditions" for Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate with U.S. President Donald Trump in Budapest, despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Oct. 17, according to news outlet European Pravda.
Budapest "will respectfully await” Putin’s visit and provide all conditions for his meeting with Trump, he said.
"We will ensure his ability to enter Hungary, hold successful talks here, and then return home. No coordination with anyone is needed," said the Hungarian diplomat.
Szijjarto claimed Hungary is "Europe’s safest country and one of the safest in the world," making it ideal for the Trump-Putin talks.
Details on the date and venue of the U.S.-Russia leaders’ meeting will be finalized after preparatory talks among officials from the three countries, he added.
On April 3, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban initiated Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC, making it the only EU member not part of the court.
Trump held a phone call with Putin on Oct. 16, after which he announced a new meeting in Budapest.
The U.S. leader said the talks with Russia, set within two weeks and addressing Ukraine among other issues, will include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Orban later said he spoke with Trump and planned to call Putin, confirming Hungary’s readiness to host the summit with preparations already underway.
The Kremlin confirmed on Oct. 17 that Putin intends to meet Trump within two weeks, with preliminary calls and meetings between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Rubio.
