Ukrainian intelligence publishes a conversation between Russians about Sergey Kotov sinking

5 March 2024, 04:50 PM

Ukrainian HUR intelligence service has released an intercepted conversation on their YouTube channel between Russians discussing the sinking of Sergey Kotov patrol ship. The conversation revealed that Russian soldiers tried to fend off Ukrainian drones for about 40 minutes before the ship went down.

Details of the ship's destruction were discussed by the commander of the 184th Naval Brigade Commander, under which the Sergei Kotov was subordinate.

The commander recounted a "tragic event" that happened at 00:50, saying five unmanned boats (BEKs) attacked the ship, which was on combat air defense duty.

The Russians tried unsuccessfully for 40 minutes to defend against the attacking drones.

"I don't know how they fought with them for 40 minutes, because 40 minutes prior, there was information that five BEKs were in the 'Kotov' area,” he said.

“There was even a helicopter there, and the ship, damn it, was armed with AK-176 630.”

Destroyed Sergey Kotov patrol ship: What’s known

Maritime Magura V5 drones destroyed the Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship Sergey Kotov in Ukrainian territorial waters near the Kerch Strait on the night of March 5.

The drones damaged the ship's stern, right, and left sides. The cost of the sunken ship is approximately $65 million, HUR reported.

The destruction of the Sergey Kotov ship resulted in casualties and injuries among the crew. However, some crew members may have been evacuated, Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for the Main Intelligence Directorate, said.

The Sergey Kotov was guarding the Kerch Strait, Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, said. He also reported on Feb. 15 that only five of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's 13 large landing ships remained afloat.

Ukrainian defense forces regularly destroy Russian Black Sea Fleet ships since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
