IAEA to expand mission in Ukraine
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will expand its presence in Ukraine to include monitoring key power substations critical to nuclear plant safety, head of Ukraine’s nuclear safety inspection service Oleg Korikov announced on Sept. 5.
“During the latest visit of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to Ukraine, it was agreed that the IAEA will expand its presence in the country,” Korikov said at a press briefing.
“This expansion will include monitoring electrical substations that are crucial for the safety of nuclear power plants, either providing power output or, if necessary, ensuring power supply to the nuclear plants from the grid. This will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the state of nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine.”
He added that an IAEA monitoring mission would visit one of the substations damaged by Russian attacks as early as next week.
On Sept. 4, IAEA head Grossi visited the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, where one of the cooling towers caught fire on Aug. 11. The agency later said the tower will most likely have to be demolished.
