Iceland to hold EU membership referendum

Iceland will hold a referendum on reapplying to join the
European Union “in the coming months,” PM Kristrun
Frostadottir said on Feb. 25.
Frostadottir made the remark during a visit to Poland, at a news conference in Warsaw with Polish PM Donald Tusk.
“We are going forward now in the next few months — possibly, as we haven’t decided finally on the date, but in the coming months … — to have a referendum on opening up the accession negotiations for Iceland for possibly joining the EU,” The Guardian quoted Frostadottir.
Tusk said the EU must treat larger and smaller countries equally and added he would be “more than happy” if Iceland joined the bloc, even if the EU would have to be somewhat flexible to accommodate the country.
Politico, citing people familiar with the plans, reported earlier that Iceland is considering holding an EU referendum in August 2026.
Iceland initially applied to join the EU in July 2009. After parliamentary elections in April 2013, a new center-right coalition government decided to halt accession negotiations, and Iceland formally withdrew its application in 2015.
On Feb. 24, Frostadottir, along with other senior European officials,
visited Kyiv on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of
Ukraine.
