The Israeli Defense Forces have launched ground operations in Deir al-Balah, a central Gaza Strip area where no prior ground offensive had occurred, The Times of Israel reports on July 20.

The military has ordered the evacuation of civilians from the southwestern part of Gaza City ahead of an expected escalation in hostilities.

“The Israel Defense Forces continues to operate with great force to destroy enemy capabilities and terrorist infrastructure in the area, expanding its operations to areas where it has not previously operated,” said IDF spokesman Col. Avihai Adrai.

The decision to launch an offensive in Deir al-Balah comes amid prolonged ceasefire talks in Qatar. Israel has accused Hamas of delaying its response to the proposals.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters in Tel Aviv are demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Deir al-Balah has long been controlled by militants, whom the Israeli military believes are holding prisoners there.

Despite this, the army has avoided ground operations in the area, citing concerns for the hostages’ safety.

At the same time, the Israeli Air Force continues airstrikes on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.

In recent days, more than 2.7 kilometers of underground tunnels used by militants for movement and attacks have been destroyed.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, about 100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 500 injured in recent fighting.

Israel says it tries to minimize civilian casualties, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.

The conflict has been ongoing since October 2023. Total casualties among civilians and military personnel on both sides have exceeded tens of thousands.
