Iran strikes Saudi oil pipeline used to bypass Strait of Hormuz

Shortly after a ceasefire was supposed to have ended hostilities
in the Persian
Gulf, Iranian forces attacked Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, Reuters reported
on April 8.
The pipeline was the only reliable export route for Saudi crude, free from Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The pipeline was diverting around 7 million barrels per day (bpd) from the kingdom's oil heartland in the east to the Red Sea port of Yanbu after Iran effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz, trapping huge volumes of oil and gas in the Gulf and sending prices skyrocketing,” Reuters said.
Reuters quoted an industry source as saying the attack was expected to affect pipeline deliveries and that damage assessments were ongoing.
“Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement on Wednesday they had hit several targets across the region with missiles and drones, including what the IRGC called oil facilities of U.S. companies in Yanbu,” the report added.
Analysts have warned that the damage could worsen the global
energy crisis. Saudi state oil company Saudi Aramco consumes about 2 million
barrels a day domestically, leaving roughly 5 million barrels a day for export.
Shipment data showed loading at Yanbu averaged about 4.6 million barrels a day
the week that began March 23, near capacity, despite attacks on the hub on
March 19, Reuters noted.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
