Iran is planning to meddle with the U.S. midterm elections after attempting to interfere in Israel’s vote this week, The Telegraph reported on Oct. 29, citing unnamed Iranian officials.

One Iranian official said elections being held almost simultaneously in two of Iran’s main adversaries present a rare opportunity to exploit vulnerabilities in their democratic systems.

“We have been looking into ways to recruit agents in both the American and Israeli regimes’ election processes,” the official said.

“It also means we are prepared to disrupt their elections, their banking, their travel and all their ordinary systems. We are not in favor of any candidate anywhere, but we would like to see a divided America and a divided Israel.”

One Iranian official also warned that if Iran were attacked again, its response would be “larger than before.”

The Telegraph wrote that Israel’s internal political disputes could complicate the government’s work while giving Iran time to replenish missile and air defense stocks damaged during this year’s U.S. strikes.

The U.S. midterm elections are scheduled for Nov. 3. Americans will elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 members.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
