Ukrainian courts handed down almost 1300 cases of mobilization evasion in the past year
In 2023, the courts handed out 1274 verdicts on mobilization evasion in Ukraine, while 60 criminal proceedings resulted in imprisonment, the Opendatabot platform reported in a press release on March 11.
The defendants received both suspended and real prison sentences, with the maximum term being five years in prison.
Last year, the number of cases against tax evaders also increased fivefold, as courts handed down a total of 220 sentences in 2022.
In January 2024, according to Opendatabot, the courts had already handed down 120 sentences to evaders. Since the beginning of the war against Russia in 2014, Ukrainian courts have handed down 3,746 verdicts on military service evasion.
On Jan. 4, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that law enforcement officers had opened about 9,000 proceedings on draft evasion since the start of the full-scale war. 2600 of them have been referred to court.
In February, the National Police reported that persons liable for military service who received suspended sentences for evading military service were still subject to mobilization, but if they did the same thing again, they would receive a real sentence.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
