U.S. envoy Kellogg briefed in-person on war in Ukraine
Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal met with U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg in Kyiv to review the situation on the battlefield and assess Russia’s military plans, Shmyhal said in a Telegram post on Aug. 25.
During the meeting, Lt. Gen. Andriy Hnatov, chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR), provided Kellogg and other U.S. officials with a detailed assessment of Moscow’s war plans and frontline conditions.
Shmyhal outlined Ukraine’s defense priorities and discussed robust
post-war security guarantees to deter further Russian aggression. Work on drafting
those guarantees continues in close coordination with international partners, he
added.
They also discussed a pending U.S.–Ukrainian agreement on partnership in drone design and manufacturing, handing related draft documents to the U.S. side.
Kellogg arrived in Kyiv on Aug. 24 to attend Independence Day events. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded him the Order of Merit, First Class.
Kellogg’s visit comes amid active discussions among the United States, Ukraine, and European allies over security assurances for Kyiv.
