Kellogg pauses ‘peace plan’ development to consult with Europeans first — report
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has paused the development of its “peace plan” for Ukraine to "give Europe a seat at the negotiating table," The Telegraph reported on Feb. 10, citing sources.
Keith Kellogg, the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine, promised to hold individual discussions with NATO allies before finalizing the long-anticipated ceasefire plan, the publication reports.
Kellogg assured that during talks with European diplomats, he would consider various options for the peace agreement and which governments can contribute to the process. The special envoy specifically mentioned he would engage with prime ministers and presidents of NATO member countries, aiming to allay fears that Washington might “freeze out” its allies.
Moreover, Kellogg announced that he would present "elements of the peace plan" at the Munich Security Conference in Germany over the weekend.
According to the report, the proposal will entail continuing military support for Kyiv in exchange for access to Ukraine's rare-earth resources. European officials who have spoken with Kellogg confirmed that Washington seeks to strengthen Ukraine's position in any future negotiations with Russia.
On Feb. 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a delegation of U.S. officials will visit Kyiv in the coming days, ahead of the Munich Security Conference.
It should be noted that, based on several media leaks, the “peace plan” the United States will ultimately present Kyiv with will contain little to noting in terms of ensuring a sustainable peace. With Ukraine being barred from joining NATO, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will have every opportunity to start another war in a few years, having rearmed and grown his military.
