Kremlin reacts to Hungary vote, says patience is needed after Orbán defeat

The Kremlin expects “pragmatic contacts” between Moscow and Hungary to continue under its new leadership, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on the country’s parliamentary election results on Apr. 13.
As reported by the Russian propaganda outlet Interfax, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia “respects” Hungary’s choice.
“We expect to continue our highly pragmatic contacts with Hungary’s new leadership,” he said.
Peskov added that it is necessary to “be patient” to see the next steps of the country’s future prime minister, Péter Magyar. The Kremlin spokesman said Russia is “interested” in maintaining good relations with Hungary, “as with all European countries.”
Earlier, the head of Hungary’s new ruling Tisza party and future prime minister, Péter Magyar, said he is ready to sit down for talks with Putin.
Magyar said Hungary and Russia are neighbors and their geographic situation will not change. At the same time, dependence on Russian energy will remain for some time.
“If necessary, we will negotiate, but we will not become friends,” the future prime minister said.
With 98.32% of votes counted in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar’s Tisza party is leading and is expected to secure 138 seats in parliament, while Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party is projected to win 55 seats.
Russian media reported that the Kremlin had been preparing for Orbán’s defeat. For Vladimir Putin, the blame for the loss will be placed on Orbán and members of his team.
