Russia has already failed in its war against Ukraine and is running out of time to reverse its fortunes on the battlefield, former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg told the Kyiv Independent on Feb. 4.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s expectations of victory are increasingly detached from reality. The balance could soon tilt in Kyiv’s favor.

“He and Russia have failed,” Kellogg said, describing a Kremlin now searching for what he called the “best possible way” to exit the conflict.

He suggested that seasonal and strategic factors could benefit Ukraine in the coming months.

“When winter ends and the days get longer, I think it will be better for Ukraine than for Russia.”

In the long term, time favors Ukraine rather than Moscow.

However, public expectations inside Ukraine remain cautious. A Feb. 2 survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) found that approximately 43% of Ukrainians believe the war will not end until 2027 or later.
