Freezing the war could lead to full-scale Russian attack on NATO – Kuleba
If the full-scale war initiated by Russia is halted, there is a concern that Moscow might subsequently launch an attack on a NATO country, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote in an article published by Foreign Affairs on Dec. 14.
If the frontline in Ukraine is frozen at the current state, says Kuleba, “there is no reason to believe” that Russia won’t exploit the pause to plan and execute an even more severe attack in the coming years. Such an attack could potentially extend to neighboring countries or NATO member states, he warned.
“Those who believe Russia will not attack a NATO country after celebrating success in Ukraine should recall how unimaginable a large-scale invasion of Ukraine seemed just two years ago,” added Kuleba.
Russia is considering several scenarios for the war against Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a speech in Granada at the European Political Community Summit on Oct. 5, based on HUR (Main Intelligence Directorate)intelligence.
He cautioned that one of these scenarios involves Russia freezing the conflict and restoring its military potential. According to the president, the critical moment could be the year 2028.
“Russia will have enough strength to attack countries that are in the focus of Russian expansion. In addition to Ukraine, these are the Baltic countries and those countries where Russian contingents are present,” he said.
