Kyiv braces for Caspian dust storm
Air quality in Kyiv and much of Ukraine deteriorates as a dust storm from Russia's Caspian region has enveloped the country. The Health Ministry warned the residents of the capital against going outside, in a Facebook post on Sept. 30.
“On Oct. 1-2, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center reported that air quality in the capital is expected to deteriorate due to dust from the Caspian region,” the statement said.
“This situation is expected to last until Friday [Oct. 4], when the wind direction in Ukraine will shift to the south and west.”
The ministry advises staying indoors unless absolutely necessary, turning off outdoor air-ventilation systems, closing windows and doors, and sealing gaps with materials such as tape or wet cloth to reduce exposure to polluted air.
The advice also recommends frequent wet cleaning of indoor spaces and placing open water containers around the house to humidify the air.
When outdoors, they recommend wearing masks or respirators. If these are not available, one should cover the nose and mouth with damp cloth.
Additionally, the ministry advises taking multiple showers a day and drinking 2-3 liters of water daily.
